On Thursday, I received the news I’ve been waiting for with white-knuckled apprehension since I took my viva voce exam. I have the results of my viva, and thus the results of my degree. I passed the exam and the degree is mine. I’m now Zoë Kirk-Robinson, BSc (Dunelm), LLB (Hons) (Open).
I once joked that I was on a quest to get every letter in the alphabet after my name. So far I’ve collected 12 out of 26. Not bad. Not bad at all.
The class of degree isn’t high enough to make it worth going on to the next stage of law. It’s a very competitive, cut-throat career and unless you’ve got age on your side and you’re willing to work for nothing getting work experience through mini pupillages and so forth, you’re highly unlikely to succeed.
I’m 32 and I don’t have time to give up work in order to get the experience I’d need to make it past all those bright young things with their first class degrees. So I’m bowing out of the field at this point. I’ve got the education needed to be a lawyer, I just won’t be going on to be a barrister or even a solicitor. I can live with that.
The degree I’ve achieved has been won through a lot of hard work, especially in the last 18 months where I’ve basically gone through hell and back. I’m proud of making it this far and I’m not going to let what I’ve learned go to waste. I’m going to make use of this degree by combining it with my previous degree (a bachelor of science degree in physics with a speciality in particle & nuclear physics – fun times) and using them both to fuel my writing.
In essence, I’m going to keep on writing about law and science. I’m also going to keep on making legal & political comics, as well as writing science-fiction & horror stories. I have loved learning about law but now it’s time to make the learning work for me, rather than the other way around.
In addition, I’ll continue to make law and politics videos, as well as commenting on anything else in the news that takes my fancy. Today’s video is a good example of doing just that.
On the subject of writing, Curse of the Other World is coming along very nicely. The story is falling into place on the page again, which is brilliant. I’m really enjoying this incarnation of the novel and I’m looking forward to getting it finished so all of you can enjoy it, too. As with Unholy Crusade, I’ll make the first chapter available online so you can get a feel for the book. That will happen closer to the time the book is laid out for printing and formatted up for ebook publication.
Why the wait? Because I want to go over the whole thing once it’s all written, tighten up the plotting and make sure everything reads nicely. Still, it’s not long to wait, now.
