A change of many things

In bloomIt’s a strange state of affairs when the medication you take to keep your mind on the straight and narrow can turn your skin purple. I visited the psychiatrist today for what turned out to be my final weekly visit and I have to say I am so glad I don’t have to travel across the city to see this guy for twenty minutes each week. It takes up the entire morning and part of the afternoon, because I have to use public transport. One of these days I will actually take my driving test. Maybe.

Of course I have to pass the theory test first. I took it once before. I failed it for speeding. I’m not joking either. Every question I got wrong on it was about speed. I missed out on a pass by one point, which is the story of my life.

Anyway, I got taken off the lithium tablets after spending the last week tapering off the dose in order to not send my system into shock. I’m now on sodium valproate instead. Why? Because the lithium was shutting down my kidneys. That was not the most pleasant experience I’ve ever had but it was far better than how I felt when the Androcur I was taking as part of my treatment for gender identity disorder started to shut down my liver. Ever had a hangover that lasted for six months? I have. It’s not pleasant.

I’ve been feeling under the weather for the last couple of days, which has made looking at a computer difficult. That’s why there were no comic updates today. The comics will be back tomorrow because I started pulling ’round at about 11PM. Too late to start work on the comics (I have a rule now that I don’t work after 7pm – it gives me time to myself) but not too late for me to get a good night’s sleep and start work on them tomorrow morning. That’s the plan anyway. Expect them to go online around midday.

So what have I done today except see my shrink and feel ill? Well, I recorded a video about some things in the news that got me worked up. I don’t normally like to rant but today’s video came from the gut, so to speak. I’ll post it here so you can see why.

Other than that, I’ve mostly been laid up in bed, drinking lots of fluids and trying to get better. I read about half of the second Anita Blake novel, The Laughing Corpse. It’s actually a rather good book. I’m thoroughly enjoying the detective style Hamilton writes in and the addition of urban fantasy elements is nice. I know this series gets a bad rap for the direction it goes in around book ten but right now I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I picked up the first three books from Waterstone’s once when Jennifer was doing a book signing so if the third novel reads as well as the first two have, I’ll probably pick up the fourth and see how that goes, too.

Speaking of books, I’m working on an edit of Unholy Crusade right now. That link there will take you to part one of the first draft of the story. I’m editing and redrafting the story for release as an eBook and so far it’s looking a lot different. I think it’s definitely true that the first draft is always the worst when compared to how a work ends up. I like the story and the first draft has the basic elements of the story in it, but the new version plays out very differently. I think it has been much improved for having been rewritten.
